Managing spent fuel

On Wednesday 24 February British Energy submitted an application under section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989, seeking the Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change consent to construct and operate a Dry Fuel Store as an extension to the Sizewell B Power Station and, under section 90(2) of the Town & Planning Act 1990, a request  that planning permission for the development be deemed to be granted.

Any objections to the proposal, stating the name of the power station and the grounds of the objection, should be made in writing to the Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change, 3 Whitehall Place, London, SW1A 2AW, or by email to: John.Swift@decc.gsi.gov.uk not later than 16 April 2010.

Consultation with the public

Prior to the application, public exhibitions were held locally during May 2009 to discuss the Best Practicable Environmental Option study associated with this project. You can download our spent fuel booklet and feedback report and Q&A document.

In September 2009 British Energy submitted an Environmental Scoping Report to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). The Scoping Report outlined the nature and purpose of British Energy’s proposed spent fuel management strategy which options included on-site storage in a dry fuel store from 2015.

During November and December 2009 we consulted on our proposals for a dry storage facility to manage spent fuel at Sizewell B. If you would like to view the consultation document please click here. On Wednesday 11 November we held a meeting at the Sizewell Sports and Social Club with members of the public. Click here to see a transcript of the questions and answers session.
